The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched a major road development project to upgrade the Sohna-Alwar road, covering the critical Firozpur Jhirka to Naugaon stretch. This 96-kilometer corridor, starting from Rajiv Chowk in Gurgaon and ending near Naugaon in Ramgarh, Rajasthan, is set to undergo a significant transformation to meet national highway standards.
Why This Road Upgrade
Though officially a national highway, the Sohna-Nuh-Firozpur Jhirka-Naugaon road has long lacked the infrastructure expected from such an important transport route. Previously under the jurisdiction of the Public Works Department (PWD), development remained minimal despite the road’s growing importance.
Now, under NHAI’s supervision, the road is getting a long-overdue upgrade—aimed at improving interstate connectivity between Haryana and Rajasthan and easing traffic congestion in key areas like Sohna, Nuh, Firozpur Jhirka, and Badshapur.
Current Challenges on the Route
This vital highway sees an estimated 50,000 vehicles pass through daily, transporting essential goods, including dairy products, from Rajasthan into Gurgaon and Delhi. However, poor road conditions, lack of service lanes, and narrow stretches, especially near Badshapur and between Tawdu and Nuh, have created traffic bottlenecks and safety concerns.
NHAI’s Infrastructure Development Plan
To solve these issues, NHAI has planned a two-fold development strategy:
- New Infrastructure Construction: Where roads and service lanes are missing, they will be newly built.
- Existing Road Improvement: Substandard sections will be widened and enhanced.
The entire stretch will be upgraded to 4 to 6 lanes. In places where expansion is not feasible due to space constraints or heavy residential density, the NHAI will build flyovers, underpasses, and even an elevated road. A proposed 2.5 km-long elevated stretch near Badshapur aims to decongest one of the busiest sections.
